Traditional oyster culture in France ArchiMer
Heral, Maurice.
The indigenous oyster of mainland France, the fiat oyster, Ostrea edulis has been part of the human diet for centuries. The Romans collected them and exported them to Rome. Although tanks for holding oysters after harvesting were in use at that time (GreIon 1978) it seems that true culture was not developed along the coast contrary to the records of Pliny the Older. It appears that oysters were already being captured on hoards off the Italian coast. The exploitation of natural stocks continued through the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. However, it was not until the 17th century that oyster culture began, first in the pools of the salt marshes of the Atlantic coast and then in specially managed ponds. Papy (1941) repeats a good description given in 1688...

Traits biologiques et exploitation du bar commun Dicentrarchus labrax (L.) dans les pêcheries françaises de la Manche et du golfe de Gascogne. ArchiMer
Fritsch, Manon.
Sea bass Dicentrarchus labrax (Linné, 1758) is a fish of major interest in France and in the British Isles. It is the main target species for some anglers and a growing number of professional fishermen. In spite of this, the reproduction of sea bass in natural environment, the identification of its populations, as well as the fleet participating to and the level of its exploitation are poorly known. Thus, in the perspective of a future management of the bass fisheries, this thesis collected required data for the analysis of the sea bass resource in the English Channel and the Bay of Biscay. A first chapter describes to the principal biological and ecological characteristics of Dicentrarchus labrax. The five following chapters deal successively with: (i)...

Une expérience de production de "naissain naturel un à un" dans le bassin d'Arcachon ArchiMer
His, Edouard.

Uniformity in the basal metabolic rate of marsupials: its causes and consequences RChHN
MACNAB,BRIAN K..
Most of the variation (98.8 %) in basal rate of metabolism (BMR) in 70 species of marsupials is correlated with body mass, although lowland species have higher basal rates than highland species and burrowers have lower basal rates than non-burrowers. These factors collectively account for 99.2 % of the variation in marsupial BMR. Marsupials differ in BMR from eutherians by having no species with a high basal rate by general mammalian standards, even when consuming vertebrates or grass, food habits that are associated with very high basal rates in eutherians. The absence of high basal rates in marsupials reflects the absence of a correlation of rate of reproduction with basal rate, a correlation present in eutherians. These differences have two...

Upstream migration and reproductive patterns of a population of allis shad in a small river (L'Aulne, Brittany, France) ArchiMer
Acolas, M; Veron, V; Jourdan, H; Begout, Marie-laure; Sabatie, M; Bagliniere, J.l..
The characteristics and activity of adult allis shad [Alosa alosa (L.)] were analysed during the last part of their upstream migration in the L'Aulne, a small river in Brittany, and during reproduction on a unique spawning ground downstream of an insurmountable dam. The age of the spawners ranged front three to seven years, females being larger and older than males. Population-level migration and reproduction were studied by counting the number of migrating fish, by estimating the sex ratio, and by counting the number of nocturnal spawning acts for three consecutive years starting in 2000. The influence of the environment, especially water temperature and discharge, was highlighted: temperature during migration may supplant the influence of water flow,...

Use of a GnRH synthetic analog (buserelin) for estrous induction in female dogs Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Rezende,R.S.; Eurides,D.; Barbosa,C.P.; Lacerda,M.S.; Sampaio,R.L.; Gomes,A.L..
ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of a GnRH synthetic analog, as an estrous inducer in female dogs when administered during the anestrous phase, and to evaluate the pregnancy rate achieved through natural copulation. For this purpose, ten female dogs of different breeds were used. The subjects received buserelin by intramuscular injections at a dose of 2,1mcg when female dogs weighed up to 10kg (Group 1) and of 4,2mcg when the dogs weighed above 10kg (Group 2). Of the ten subjects, only three presented estrus after a single injection of buserelin: two dogs from Group 1 and one dog from Group 2 on average 7±1.29 days. The remaining seven dogs were given a second dose of buserelin, equal to the first administration. Of these,...

Variação anual do sistema reprodutor de fêmeas de Bothrops jararaca (Serpentes, Viperidae) Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Janeiro-Cinquini,Thélia R. F..
The morphological changes of the ovary and oviduct of 238 tropical snakes Bothrops jararaca (Wied, 1824) were determined. The ovarian mass presented a remarkable decrease in October, after ovulation, staying in low levels from November to March, during the gestational period. From April to September, it increased because of the ovarian follicles maturation. A gradual increase in oviduct weight was observed from October to March due to stages of embryonic development. A significant difference was observed between right and left ovary weight, and oviduct length, independently of the months considered.

Variation in life-history traits of European anchovy along a latitudinal gradient: a bioenergetics modelling approach ArchiMer
Huret, Martin; Tsiaras, K; Daewel, U; Skogen, Md; Gatti, Paul; Petitgas, Pierre; Somarakis, S.
Anchovy Engraulis encrasicolus distribution in European waters spans from the Mediterranean Sea to the North Sea, and is expected to expand further north with global warming. Observations from the eastern Mediterranean (North Aegean Sea), the Bay of Biscay and the North Sea reveal latitudinal differences in growth, maximum size, fecundity and timing of reproduction. We set up a mechanistic framework combining a bioenergetics model with regional physical-biogeochemical models providing temperature and zooplankton biomass to investigate the underlying mechanisms of variation in these traits. The bioenergetics model, based on the Dynamic Energy Budget theory and initially calibrated in the Bay of Biscay, was used to simulate growth and reproduction patterns....

Vitamin E and reduced glutathione in Prochilodus lineatus (curimba) semen cryopreservation (Characiformes: Prochilodontidae) Neotropical Ichthyology
Paula,Daniella A. J.; Andrade,Estefânia S.; Murgas,Luis D. S.; Felizardo,Viviane O.; Winkaler,Elissandra U.; Zeviani,Walmes; Freitas,Rilke T. F..
This study investigated the addition of antioxidants vitamin E and reduced glutathione on curimba (Prochilodus lineatus) semen cryopreservation and compared sodium bicarbonate solution and distilled water as activators. The experiment was conducted at the environmental station of CEMIG, in Itutinga-MG, Brazil, between December/2009 and January/2010. Semen samples (n = 7) with semen motility above 80% were diluted in cryoprotectant solutions composed of 10% methanol, 15% lactose and containing different concentrations of antioxidants: 50 (VE50), 100 (VE100) and 250 (VE250) µM of vitamin E, and 0.5 (RG0.5), 1.0 (RG1.0) and 1.5 (RG1.5) mM of reduced glutathione. A solution without antioxidants was used as a control. The semen was diluted at a ratio of 1:4...

Why Did the Snake Cross the Road? Effects of Roads on Movement and Location of Mates by Garter Snakes (Thamnophis sirtalis parietalis) Ecology and Society
Shine, Richard; University of Sydney; rics@bio.usyd.edu.au; Lemaster, Michael; ; lemasterm@mail.science.orst.edu; Wall, Michael; ; mwall@bio.usyd.edu.au; Langkilde, Tracy; ; langkild@bio.usyd.edu.au; Mason, Robert; ; masonr@science.oregonstate.edu.
If animals avoid road surfaces or are unable to follow conspecific trails across such surfaces, previously continuous populations may be fragmented. We gathered data on the effects of a small (4-m wide) gravel road on the behavior and trail-following abilities of garter snakes (Thamnophis sirtalis parietalis) in Manitoba, central Canada. As expected, the road surface had less vegetation cover, a more open canopy and, thus, higher incident radiation than did the surrounding grassland. Contrary to expectations, however, substrate temperatures were lower on the road than in its surrounds, because of the higher reflectivity of the road's surface. On a nearby asphalt road, substrate temperatures were relatively high on the road surface only in the evening, as...

Zygoparity in Characidae - the first case of internal fertilization in the teleost cohort Otomorpha Neotropical Ichthyology
Fukakusa,Clayton Kunio; Mazzoni,Talita Sarah; Malabarba,Luiz Roberto.
Abstract Most teleosts are externally fertilizing, with internal fertilization occurring as a relatively rare event. Until now, Euteleosteomorpha is the only teleost cohort known to undergo internal fertilization. In the teleost cohort Otomorpha, it has been recorded the presence of sperm in the ovaries of some species of Characiformes and Siluriformes, but no fertilized eggs have been found so far in the female reproductive tract. It has been presumed that oocytes can be released into the water with associated spermatozoa and only there becomes fertilized, and the term insemination has been used to characterize the strategy adopted by these fish. Here, we present the discovery of the first case of internal fertilization in the teleost cohort Otomorpha, in...
